Art and Reflexivity

Creative Uses of Psychology

The imagination is man’s power over nature.

—Wallace Stevens (1930)

Introduction

My exploration of the uses of psychology has emphasized the roles it fulfills within broader cultural projects. The scientific explanations embodied in empirical psychology are one such project, and the individualism enacted in discursive psychology is another. If descriptive explanation tells us how, culture is the technology through which we consider why. In this final chapter, I describe how art and the humanities are creative uses of psychology that furnish us with reflexive knowledge such as contextual modes of contemplation and coping in a range of expressive formats.1 They accomplish this through engendering mimetic and transcendent experiences that are both analogical and discursive.
